Hallicrafters SX-96

The Hallicrafters SX-96 is very similar to the SX-100 without a few of the features like notch filter and crystal calibrator. This radio was quite a mess and required some repairs after the restoration was complete. The 2nd converter sub-chassis had to be replaced. A parts SX-100 provided the replacement sub-chassis. The sub-chassis is very difficult to work on because it has to be un-wired and removed from the chassis. The radio is not a looker, but works well and has strong reception. As is common on the Hallicrafters with Bakelite knobs, the band spread knob is chipped. It could use a new paint job on the chassis lid.

  1. Where might I obtain a good, clear schematic for this radio. I plan on helping my father restore his Hallicrafters SX-96. He’s had it since the late 50’s early 60’s. I can remember spending hours tuning the world at night when I was a kid and seeing those dials lit up at night in a dark room was so cool!!!

  2. You can find a schematic on one of the free sites like Bama (Boat Anchor Manual Archive) or Nostalgia air.

  3. Hi, I have a Hallicrafters SX96 that I just took out of storage after about 50 years. I am worried that capacitors, etc might be worn out but I did buy all new tubes before putting it in storage so they should be okay. What would you recommend I do before turning it on? If I have a problem, do you restore the SX-96? The comments I have also apply to my Hallicrafters transceiver SR-400A i.e. in storage for 50 years. My ham license (WA2YYF) is still active. I’m in my 70’s and getting the itch to get active again. Ultimately, I have to make the decision as to whether I restore or buy new. Any thoughts or comments you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  4. You shouldn’t turn on any old vacuum tube electronics. Old electrolytic capacirots can be shorted and will blow transformers. Old electronics have to be replaced and the radio powered up slowly on a variac. I start by replacing the old power cord, add a fuse, and replace the electrolytic capacitors before I even power up an old radio.

  5. Can you please comment on the electrical AND mechanical stability? My SX96 seems to be a basket case relative to stability. Can it be fixed?
